Understanding Ifá

A Yoruba tradition of divination, wisdom, ethical reflection and guidance.

What is Ifá?

Ifá is a traditional Yoruba system of divination and a body of knowledge associated with Ọ̀rúnmìlà. Its corpus includes Odu, verses, stories, teachings and traditional practices used to reflect on circumstances, choices, character and destiny.

What is Odu?

Odu are the signs or configurations used in Ifá divination. Each Odu connects to a broad body of verses and teachings. Interpretation is contextual and depends on the knowledge and experience of the practitioner.

Why is character important?

Many Ifá teachings place strong emphasis on ìwà pẹ̀lẹ́ — good, gentle and responsible character. Spiritual knowledge is not separated from how a person treats others, handles responsibility and makes decisions.

What is an Ifá consultation?

A consultation is a traditional process through which a person seeks guidance about questions or circumstances. The practitioner interprets the relevant Odu and verses and explains traditional recommendations where applicable.

Respectful practice: Spiritual guidance is not a guarantee of a particular financial, medical, relationship or other outcome. For medical, legal or financial matters, also seek appropriately qualified professional advice.
